Turning 65 Medicare Guide:
Everything You Need to Know
Navigating your 65th birthday milestone can feel like an avalanche of mail and confusing sales calls. At True Health Insurance Group (formerly 12 Stones Financial Services), we simplify the entire roadmap into clear, stress-free steps.
The 7-Month Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
Medicare gives you a specific 7-month window to sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B without any late penalties.
Sign Up Early
Applying during the 3 months before your 65th birthday month ensures your coverage starts on the very first day of your birth month with zero coverage gap.
Your 65th Birthday
If you enroll during your birthday month, coverage begins the 1st of the following month. If your birthday is on the 1st of any month, Medicare treats you as turning 65 the month prior!
Last Chance of IEP
You can still enroll in the 3 months following your birth month, but your effective date might be delayed. Once this window closes, you may face ongoing late penalties unless you qualify for an SEP.
Your 4-Step Turning 65 Roadmap
Follow these simple steps with our licensed advisors to make sure everything goes smoothly:
Determine If You Need to Enroll Right Now
Are you still actively working and covered under an employer group health plan with 20+ employees? If yes, you might be able to delay Part B and save on premiums. If you work for a small employer (<20 employees) or are retiring, you MUST enroll in Medicare to maintain primary coverage.
Enroll in Part A & Part B with Social Security
If you already collect Social Security benefits, you'll be enrolled automatically and your red, white, and blue Medicare card will arrive in the mail. If not, you apply online via SSA.gov or call the local Dallas/Richardson Social Security office.
Decide Between Medigap vs. Medicare Advantage
This is the biggest fork in the road:
• Option A (Original Medicare + Medigap + Part D): Highest freedom of choice, see any doctor in the USA that accepts Medicare, predictable out-of-pocket costs, higher monthly premium.
• Option B (Medicare Advantage / Part C): Lower monthly premium (often $0), extra dental/vision perks, restricted HMO or PPO provider networks and copays as you use care.
Confirm Your Doctors, Hospitals & Prescriptions
Before finalizing any application, we check your specific healthcare providers (e.g., Methodist Richardson, Baylor Scott & White, UT Southwestern, Texas Health Resources) and run your exact prescription list through Medicare's database to protect against unexpected out-of-pocket costs.
